The most recent single by Los Angeles based artist Flying Lotus, “Never Catch Me (feat. Kendrick Lamar)” is a chill, ethereal sounding track that is just a taste of the producer’s upcoming album. Flylo, as he is commonly called by his fans, has finished recording and mixing his newest album titled You’re Dead and it is set for release on October 7th of this year. One of the most popular indie electronic artists on the scene, over the years Flylo has managed to gather a strong following that includes heavyweight artists like Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke, Earl Sweatshirt and Kendrick Lamar. Speaking of Lamar, he is the featured guest on the first single of Flylo’s new album and in all honestly he could not have chosen better.
“Never Catch Me” starts off with an almost jazzy beat that builds up quickly before Lamar begins his lyrical domination of the track. Rapping insanely fast he shows why he is one of the most buzzed about rising hip-hop artists in the world. The layered distortion and simple piano combine for an almost calming affect, that balances Lamar’s high speed rhymes. For the last half of the track, Flylo gets down and delivers a heavy dose of electronic fuzz with an omnipresent drum beat in the background. “Never Catch Me” may not be his most experimental track but it represents a new beginning for the trip-hop producer and is a must have if you are a fan or electronic music lover.
