Michael Stipe performs live for the first time since R.E.M.’s breakup

960x540For the first time since R.E.M.‘s breakup in 2011, former frontman Michael Stipe has returned to the stage. He performed as the special unannounced act for Patti Smith’s New York Webster Hall show on Monday night. Stipe performed a short six song set that included R.E.M. tracks and covers.

The set consisted of R.E.M.’s s “Saturn Return” and “New Test Leper,” along with covers of Vic Chesnutt’s “Lucinda Williams”, Patti Smith’s own “Wing”, Perfume Genius’ “Hood”, and “New York, New York”. Hopefully this means that Stipe is readying a tour as a solo artist in the near future.

Below, listen to audio and watch a video of the set.
