Concert News: Top 3 Collaboration Shows 2014

concerts

It is always exciting when special collaboration shows are announced. What I mean by “Collaboration Shows” is when two or more artist combine forces for a unique one of a kind event. I do not mean supergroups which are members of fairly well known bands that get together under one name to write and perform music together. These groups usually record and tour together for a finite amount of time. No, what I am referring to are once in a lifetime collaborations that people will rarely ever see again. I know that when one of these events are announced I am always hitting myself for not being close to where it is being held, or my lack of funds (the joys of being in college). So, my only alternative is to write about the three best collaboration shows of 2014!

Song Of The Week: “Violent Shiver” By Benjamin Booker

Violent-Shiver

Hold onto your hats, the firestorm know as “Violent Shiver” is sure to rattle your eardrums and send you into a crazy dance frenzy! The first single off of self titled album Benjamin Booker by, you guessed it Benjamin Booker, is a bluesy, fast paced tribute to American rock and roll. The single was released in April of this year and while it has yet to receive the attention it so rightly deserves, rock fans lucky enough to discover the new rising star of gritty, melodic, folk punk are fortunate to do so at the very beginning of his career. “Violent Shiver” is an anthemic almost Pixie sounding track, that is fueled by adrenaline and pure grit. Clocking around just under three minutes the song is short and yet very very sweet, with fast guitar riffs that flow easily with Bookers gruff New Orleans drawl. Be sure to tell your friends about Booker first, because this song will be the track to define the start of his incredibly bright career.

Album Review: Royal Blood (self titled)

Roral-Blood-Royal-Blood

The rock duo comprising of bassist/vocalist Mike Kerr and drummer Ben Thatcher from Brighton, England are having a breakthrough year with the release of their debut album, self-titled Royal Blood. Imagine if The White Stripes and The Black Keys with the help of a wizard created a little rock and roll offspring? Well in all likelihood that offspring would be hard rock duo Royal Blood. Their self titled album was released on August 25th of this year and instantly debuted at number one on the UK rock charts, selling around 660,000 copies in its first week. This was the first time since 2011 that a rock album has reached number one in the UK and could be a shoo in for rock album of the year.

KRFH – Radio Free Humboldt

imgres

As you may or may not have guessed, KRFH Radio Free Humboldt is located in Humboldt County, CA, which is where I go to school. It’s this old little radio box where I am the current music manager/DJ. Check it out, we’re web-based. But we recently got our very own FM station, 105.1, which is a pretty big deal for us.

I’ve been a DJ with KRFH for three years now, and I’ve been a manager for two. My duty as music manager is to organize our (extensive) library and bring new music to the station. As a DJ, I have one or two shows a week where I play a variety of music. Most genres make it into my playlist, but I try to keep it new.  Continue reading
